Bee pollen (organic)

You should also check out some of the toppings like bee pollen, which have incredible health benefits and are also full of nutrition.

They are for example high in Vitamin C, Iron, Calcium and I read (on amazon reviews) that they reduce hay fever symptoms. But for that ideally, you need to soak the pollen beforehand for 24h.

6. Makes you happy

Isn’t that an amazing benefit!

HAPPINESS!

What would we do without our eyes, right?

Eye health is a very important and personal topic to me, as I am struggling with auras from silent migraines. And that made me realise how much we can suffer, even if we lose just a small percentage of our vision.

Eating 3 portions of strawberries a week can decrease your chance of heart attacks by 34%.

This is what an analysis showed from data over 93,600 women, who were involved in studies.

TIP:

If you want to top it up you can drop some almonds as toppings onto the breakfast smoothie to make it even healthier. They also protect the heart.

What is pitaya fruit / dragon fruit?

The sweet, extravagant looking fruit is known under several names: Dragon fruit, Pitaya or Pitahaya.

In Asia, it is even called: “strawberry pear”.

The spectacular fruit is growing in Asia, Mexico, Central America, and South America.

Why is it called: “dragon fruit”?

Many bright pink dragon fruits next to each other with green leaves

Original it was harvested in Central America, although not everyone agrees with the historians.

Chinese legends tell the story that the fruit was created by a dragon. That dragon spat fire that contained the powerful fruit.

Soldiers then took this powerful fruit, that the dragon spat and presented it to their king, after killing the dragon.

Legends say, that the flesh of the fruit would give them the strength of a dragon.

Others believe the fruit also has got its name due to its look. As some types are bright red, with green tales.

Similar looking to a dragon. No?

Which story do you believe?

How fascinating, right?

How to grow a dragon fruit plant.

Now we are getting at another exciting plant.

Especially if you love plants! Dragon fruits are even more special because the plant is from a fast-growing cactus,

and can produce for more than 20 years.

Guess what?!

Now the crazy part is, that the flower buds are even edible, once cooked!

The plant itself can grow 15-20 feet (4.5 -6 meters) high.

Imagine, that’s the same size as a peach or cherry tree.

If that made you curious for more, I found some experts, who can teach you all about growing those magical cactus plants!

Here is an amazing little intro video if you want to grow your plant.

Is dragon fruit good for you?

Dah!

It has plenty of benefits. Have a look at its full list.

What are the side effects of dragon fruit?

Let me guess you are wondering if there are any side effects?

There are rare cases of allergies that have been reported.
Otherwise, it is mostly safe and one of the fruits that have hardly any side effects.

Oh, as mentioned they can turn your pee and poop PINK! 😀 But, even berries can do that!

No reason to panic, though!

Even if this happens, it might be shocking but not harmful.

Trust me 😉 I wish I could show it to you, but as this is a food blog, I have some sort of self-respect!
I guess. 😀

Types of Dragon fruit.

pexels-any-lane-5945775

You might have heard about the different variants of the fruits, don’t you?

There are 3 dragon fruit variants.

  1. YELLOW DRAGON FRUIT: The yellow shelled: with white flesh and seeds.
  2. WHITE DRAGON FRUIT: The pink shelled: with white flesh and seeds.
  3. PINK/RED DRAGON FRUIT: The pink shelled: pink flesh and seeds.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TYPES OF DRAGON FRUITS (PITAYA):

While the pink fruits can be quite big, the yellow dragon fruit can be the smallest in size, and more oval-shaped.

The white fruit is the most common one.

The nutritional can also vary. The pink flesh is super sweet. So is the yellow fruit, with the white flesh.

What to put in a dragon fruit smoothie?

Perhaps you are wondering what else goes into a  healthy tropical dragon fruit smoothie recipe like this:

In case you want to add more fruits, or want to mix it up in future?

Dragon fruit is a very nice and sweet fruit, that is similar tasting to a kiwi or watermelon. Some even say it taste like a pear.

Great combinations are besides from like pineapples, bananas, and strawberries are:

  • kiwi
  • mango
  • peaches
  • oranges
  • pear
  • blueberries
  • raspberries
  • pomegranate
  • papaya
  • oats
  • greek yogurt
  • nut milk (unsweetened)

Sweetener:

NOOOOPE!

Let me just say that already.

If you are thinking of adding any sweetener to the smoothie, there is no need. Really.

At least not if you are using the fresh dragon fruit. It is super sweet in itself. Also, most other fruits such as strawberries, mangos, pineapples etc are super sweet.

I usually only use sweeteners on other smoothies such as blueberry based recipes.

But you still need more sweetness, then add it in the end.

TOPPINGS:

For toppings, you can also add fresh fruits. Besides that nuts, cacao nibs, coconut shred or even bee pollen are a perfect topping idea.

Have a look at the toppings products that I love.

How To Combine Them:

Besides smoothies, you can also use them in fruit salads, as a snack, into yoghurts or as ice creams.

Fresh pitaya fruit VS pitaya powder VS freeze-dried fruit

Let me guess. You are wondering if the pink-pitaya powder includes any add-ins and unhealthy stuff.

Nope!

The dragon fruit powder, or called pink pitaya powder is basically 100% the same as the fruit itself!

Insane, right!

DIFFERENCE:

It is just the pulverised version, of the freeze-dried fruit. And that also contains 98% of the nutrition and is the same as the dragon fruit.

Only the water has been removed.

Why should you buy it instead of this juicy, fresh fruit?

Well, firstly it is so much easier available in most countries, like the UK or Europe.

One pack of freeze-fried chunks costs roughly 9£. With that amount, you can roughly make 3-4 smoothies.

I can’t often buy any fresh dragon fruits here. There are some on amazon, but one cost a minimum of 10£ alone.

So fresh fruits in the UK cost 3x more than freeze-fried products!

They are great also as toppings over smoothies, yoghurts or salads.

1. Fresh Dragon fruits.

Dragon fruit for fragon fruit smoothie -green background

Did you ever try a fresh Dragon fruit?

No? Omg you are missing out.

They do taste as good as they look! I would say they are juicysweet and a little bit between a kiwi and a watermelon.

YUMMY!

Some people also notice a hint of honey.

The seeds are eaten able too of course just like a kiwi.

They’re a bit crunchy, with a bit of a nutty taste.

Awesome, right?

Be aware, that the red and pink coloured dragon fruit, compared to the white-flesh ones tend to be sweeter. Although the yellow once can be super sweet as well, with bigger seeds.

What do fresh Pitayas taste like?

Do you love the smell of fresh fruits?

Even the smell of this bright and glowing fruit is settled sweet.
Like fruity.
Kind of fresh. Exotic-like, if that’s even possible.

Imagine being catapulted straight into paradise! 🙂

It reminds me also a little bit of a sweet kiwi. Or maybe because I know, this is how it taste like? I heard some comparing it with pears. Not sure if I agree. Maybe a hint.

Please try it and let me know, how it tastes for you.

What do fresh Pitayas smell like?

Make sure that your dragon fruit is RIPE! Otherwise, they taste just like kiwis: sour and unpleasant.

How to choose a dragon fruit?

It is not as easy to tell if a dragon fruit is ripe.

Not everyone is spoilt for choice:

To be honest if am not picky when choosing one of those exotic fruits, as where I live, I am super lucky to find any!

Even frozen fruits are rare in London. And you’d think you find anything here. But now and then I am lucky, and I don’t have to travel too far to a market and can pick up a lovely bunch.

If you are luckier than me, then you want to know how to choose the right ones.

As unripe fruits are a tasting sour.

So, let me cut to the chase. And tell you how you can tell a ripe from an unripe fruit in stores.

Here are the secrets:

Criteria on how to choose the perfect fruit
Check if it’s ripe:
  • Skin needs to be even coloured: For example, The fruit will turn from green to pink (for pink dragon fruits).
  • Squeeze them carefully: If they give in a little they are ripe. Too hard = unripe. Too soft = overripe.
  • The skin should be easily removed, and not tear. That’s another sign, that the fruit is ripe.
Other criteria:
  • You should also avoid fruits, that are dry at the stem.
  • If juice comes out of the fruit, avoid it. It might be dried out.

Dragon fruits are harvesting very close after they are ripe, so you might grab fruits, which are already too ripe.

Preparing THE FRUIT the right way.

1. Don’t turn your house (and yourself pink)
PINK/ RED DRAGON FRUIT:

When you are handing either pink fresh pitayas or pink supplements (powder or freeze-dried chunks) you need to watch out.

This is VERY important:

Your hand will turn PINK! That might not be the biggest issue, but also your surrounding like a kitchen counter, chopping board etc can dye. Ensure you aren’t using your favourite board, or ensure it is waxed.

It can even dye your clothes.

It is also fun, as your tongue might turn PINK! 🙂

If you have kids, this is might a fun way, especially for a kids party! But it would need to be prepared in smoothies, so they won’t make a mess, and turn your house pink.

2 Eat your fruit chilling.

If you eat the fruit as a snack, you will want to add it for 1-2 hours into the fridge!

This will TURN your pitaya into a WHOLE different fruit and boost the tastes buds the flavours will enhance even more.

I experienced that myself, but the brilliant guys from epic garden confirmed that.

How to slice a dragon fruit – 2 ways:

OPTION 1: Like a KIWI

Another genius way to prepare and cut a dragon fruit is this way:

  1. Cut off both ends (or one end, without the leaves) of the fruit (about 1.5 cm wide).
  2. Then slice horizontal into the skin towards both ends.
  3. Now peel off the shell.

TIP:

Indeed you only need to cut off the one end. The side, that does not have the leaves.

I figured that out, after cutting a few of them. It’s a tie saver and you have more fruit left.

Make sure that your dragon fruit is RIPE! Otherwise, they taste just like kiwis: sour and unpleasant.

OPTION 2 – Fast & easy

Make sure that your dragon fruit is RIPE! Otherwise, they taste just like kiwis: sour and unpleasant.

How to store dragon fruit? Can you freeze dragon fruit?

How to store on your counter:

If you like to store dragon fruit, don’t keep it longer than 2-3 days on the counter in your kitchen. If you cut and slice it, it should be eaten immediately though.
Sustainable Freezer & Storage Containers- US

In the fridge, it should be fine for about up to 5 days.

Although, it is possible to extend it up to 2 weeks. As the cold will slow down the ripening process, like with other fruits.

To make survive for sure 2 weeks ideally place it in an airtight container, and if the fruit is cut, drop either lemon over it or THIS PRODUCT. This will make it last longer.

It is MAGIC! I used it for all my veggies, and they also don’t change colour. I love it! As lemon is not as effective.

Make sure that your dragon fruit is RIPE! Otherwise, they taste just like kiwis: sour and unpleasant.

Warning:

Dragon fruit can make other fruits taste different if you keep them too close. That’s why keep them or the other fruits covered, if you store them in the fridge next to other fruits, for example!

How to store in your freezer:

Can you freeze dragon fruit?

Yes, like any other fruit it is no problem to freeze dragon fruit.
You can also freeze dragon fruit smoothie for a couple of months.

1. Cut them into small cubes, place them on parchment paper, and ensure the cubes don’t touch. That ensure they don’t freeze together.
2. The next they, once frozen you can move them into freezer bags.

I love using silicone freezer bags, which are study, are super pretty and environmentally friendly.

HOW AND WHERE TO BUY PITAYAS / DRAGON FRUITS.

Have you been struggling like me to find the real deal?

Damn! It took me months until I found my first.

Either look at markets with a wider exotic selection. Some markets and shops that sell coconuts, and other exotic fruits and veggies might have it?

UK – Market

I am living in the UK. Meaning, I am struggling and only occasionally I can find them on some side shops.
But here are my secret places on here to find tropical fruits and veggies:

Borough Market:

I found the powerful dragon fruits twice at London’s famous Borough market!

Not sure If I was lucky, but it’s a bit of a travel for me. But it was worth it.

The only problem once you find such precious fruit, you are always worried you are getting the recipe wrong. Because I was still in the development stage at that time!

Tropical fruits in bright pink and orange tones on a market with green leaves - and a half cut dr
New Covent Garden Market:

This is another magical fruit and veggie place in south London.

There are tons of yellow dragon fruits and other exotic fruits and veggies.

The early bird only gets the fruit:

The downfall is only that you need to be there at 3 am basic! WTF, right? It’s like a fish market. Because many wholesalers and restaurant owners go there to get the best pieces.

Also whenever I go to the market, I end up with so many pieces that I have to go back with an uber because I overbuy!

Who wouldn’t!

Here is a great post that describes the manic of the market’s vibe.

Frozen Dragon fruits in supermarkets

The chances are a little higher to find the fruits in the freezer section.

But that depends also on the supermarket and your area. I have tried it in Tesco, Lidl and Aldi and many smaller ones.

Aldi sometimes has got it! But also only as a mix. Better than nothing, hey?

Dragon Fruit Powder

The best thing is that you can buy pitaya aka dragon fruit powder nearly all the time online. IF you live in an area like me, where it’s hard to find fresh dragon fruits, or you can’t afford to buy them as often, it’s a good idea to buy the freeze dried powder version. Also it won’t expire as quick.

Why are fresh pitayas so expensive?

UK PRICE

3 bloody (I meant gorgeous) dragon fruits cost around 30£ on amazon in the UK!

Minimum!

And there is always a risk because I would know how they turn up. If they are good or overripe etc.

On top of that, I can hardly ever find fresh dragon fruits in the UK on any market. You wouldn’t believe you much I had to browse!

US PRICE

Even in America, where they have grown an average dragon fruit costs around 5-10 $.

Although the quality is much better, as they are being produced closer to “home” and don’t need to suffer during the transport.

The reason is that the demand is higher than the supply.

EVERYONE LOVES IT

And the HYPE is big.

With articles, which are celebrating this tropical fruit, like in The New York Times, the demand is only growing.

Are you surprised?

It is not just the most beautiful “OUT THERE” glorious looking fruit, it also tastes so damn good.

It also has tons of benefits and can be added to healthy fruit smoothies, easy breakfast recipes, juices and desserts.

It should be also kept in a cool place.

I keep mine in a glass container, but it is in our cupboard, where it’s dark, so that’s also fine.

WARNING:

Also, as mentioned the colour dyes and stains easily.

So don’t keep it in cork containers, that you want to use later for something else.
The lid on some of my containers is cork, which is okay, as I am careful, plus I am always going to use this dazzling, miracle powder!! 😀

That is very low calorie if you think of how much power you need for a smoothie.

Calories per recipe:

Let’s break it down:

You would use 1 Tbsp. in this recipe, which is for 2 people (2 servings).

1 Tbsp. = 3 teaspoons.

In other words, this recipe contains a total of  120 calories (40 Kcal x 3).

Each serving of pitaya powder holds only 60 calories.

That is less than you would use for fresh dragon fruit.

As one cup of dragon fruit contains about 136 calories.

Of course, fresh dragon fruit tastes much better, but at least you save calories and carbs!

NOTE:

You can use more powder, of course, to get more benefits and a higher nutrition value out of your smoothie.

3. Freeze-dried Dragon fruit.

Are you curious about Freeze-dried dragon fruit?
You need to try them! They are great snacks and toppings, besides smoothie add-ins.

Pink – Freeze -Dried Pitaya fruit is

  • 100% natural
  • Vegan
  • Gluten-free
  • Sugar-free
  • Dairy-free
  • No-artificial colouring

4. Fresh dragon fruit Vs pitaya powder

Dried-freezed dragon fruit VS pitaya powder layed out in powl and in spoons as a comparison shot

Are you wondering if there is any difference between the fresh fruits and the pitaya powder? Or even the freeze-dried fruits?

Nope.

The health benefits of the fresh dragon fruit and the pitaya powder is the same.

How come?

That’s because Pink Pitaya powder or the freeze-dried Pitaya chunks is 100% the same as the fruit.

Look at more details, where I explain more:

Fresh Dragon fruit VS Pink Pitaya powder VS Freeze-dried fruit

THE EXPLANATION:

Stunningly, the only difference is, that the water has been removed.

Afterwards, the fruit has been freeze-dried with a machine.

That is ALL! Really, it’s a bit crazy if you think about it, don’t you agree?

The powdered version is just the pulverised version.

In other words,

the nutritions are being kept to about 98% during this freeze-drying process.

WHAT DOES FREEZE-DRIED DRAGON FRUIT TASTE LIKE?

An interesting experience

Well, you might think, that the freeze-dried chunks don’t taste of anything, and just add colour to the smoothie.

That is not exactly right

Texture

They are having more of a funny texture, which is quite cool. As you could eat them like snacks.

They are a bit crunchy like crackers.

But after a few seconds, they dissolve if you keep it for too long in your mouth. And are super sweet!

Sweet addiction

They have on one hand an additional factor, which makes you curious for more. But on the other hand, you can’t eat the whole bag. at least not myself.

I read about lots of other people, who finished the whole bag (95-100g) 😀
Why not! It is super healthy.

Not what about the taste. It is a little sweet, just like the dragon fruit powder.

How to store freeze-dried Pink Pitaya powder

Store the pieces in an air-tight, dark cool place.

How many calories and carbs are in freeze-dried dragon fruit? And what are the nutrition facts?

For 100g of freeze-dried dragon fruit/ per pack:

  • 347 calories
  • 90.5g total carbs:
  • 14g dietary fibre
  • 56g sugars
  • 7.5 g protein
  • 1.3 g fat

Again as a reminder, you can get about 3-4 smoothies out of one pack (95-100g).

That is 80-115 Kcal per smoothie.

Which is fine, depending on what else is adding to the smoothie. You can also reduce the amount of course.

Where to buy pitayas/ powder / freeze-dried pitaya?

Dragon Fruit Powder

Freeze-Dried Pitaya

Freeze-Dried Chips

NOTE:

Both UK versions are great high-quality products, that I have both tried. But I have found that they are often sold out, that’s why I have listed both.

ONLINE SHOPPING

The easiest to buy dragon fruit (pink pitaya powder) is online. Even there the products are often sold out, as they are quite popular. Therefore I have tried several products, depending on availability.

You can also buy them in a few shops, but it’s not easy to spot.

FREEZE-DRIED PITAYA CHIPS (US):

I must admit, the chips from America are not exactly what I had in mind when creating this recipe.

But unfortunately, I had tried them once only, when a friend from America shared a bag with me.

I just remembered that they tasted a touch sweet, a bit like a healthy cracker.

In short:

So I wouldn’t know if they actually work in a smoothie recipe.

Please feel free to let me know in the comment section!

But I believe they are also pure 100% freeze-dried fruits, with no added ingredients.

At least they are fine as a healthy snack and can be used greatly as toppings.

Strawberry Pineapple Smoothie (+ dragon fruit powder) Ingredients

  1. Milk of choice, ideally unsweetened plant-based milk: Texture & benefits
  2. Frozen banana: For sweetness & thickness
  3. Frozen pineapple: For sweetness, flavour & creaminess
  4. Strawberry jam: For flavour, colour and sweetness
  5. Dragon fruit powder / or dragon fruit freeze-dried

Optional ingredients

Meal replacement smoothie.

Fancy this yummy strawberry smoothie bowl as a meal replacement?

Meaning, you need to add ingredients, to make it more filling.

Such as nuts, nut butter, chia seeds or other seeds, or protein powder.

It is a delicious smoothie recipe for any light breakfast, lunch or even weight-loss dinner if you fancy losing weight and keeping it light.

All ingredients used for a Strawberry pineapple smoothie with dragon fruit powder, chia seeds, pineapple, bananas, milk, strawberries and a vitamix blender in the front

Nuts & seeds

Do you also love adding nuts or seeds to your smoothies?

They are super healthy because they are sources of healthy fats.

Like whole nuts and seeds.

Try to mix it up, and not always stick with your favourite nuts and seeds every time, to get different nutrients and vitamins. I even add them over salts, yogurt or eat them as snacks. Because they level up any meal!

TIP:

I often get raw nuts & seeds and roast them quickly myself.
Why bother?
Because firstly it’s fast.
Secondly, packages with roasted nuts contain plenty of salt and other sh*tty addons.
If you want to add a touch of salt, you are at least in control of the amount.

NUT BUTTER

What I recently discovered is powdered nut butter!

It is the SHIT!

Simply mix it with water (or milk) and it turns into peanut butter. It has wayyy fewer calories, and fat, and is much healthier.

Also, strawberry and nut butter are a great combo.

It turns this smoothie into a filling Peanut Butter Jelly Smoothie!

CHIA SEEDS

Have you tried adding chia seeds into smoothies?

If not, it’s about time. These little powerful superfood seeds add thickness to smoothies, adding tons of fibre and protein. Which is the reason it makes you full.

Meaning, they are great for weight loss.

Beyond that, chia seeds are also lowering cholesterol and can improve your gut health.

Protein Powder

Protein powder in smoothies is great for muscle building, weight loss, style and adds THE flavour KICK.

Especially in this breakfast recipe, I would highly recommend using either vanilla flavoured powder or even strawberry taste is awesome in many smoothie recipes.

Which one is your favourite?

If you rather enjoy this smoothie as a dessert and like to skip the protein powder, that is okay. I have tested it with and without it.

Is milk replaceable?

  • You can use either plant-based milk, dairy milk or even water. Although, I prefer milk in this smoothie, as it makes it creamier. But it’s not necessarily needed, as the yogurt itself makes it creamy. You can even add yogurt instead of liquid if you have a high-speed blender.

Or, could you skip milk completely?

  • Well, that depends on your blender. If you have a high-speed blender you can skip any liquids. That’s what I do often, to create a thick and creamy smoothie bowl. If you have a smaller travel blender, don’t skip on milk or water! As you will break it eventually. They are not powerful enough.

Can you replace “dragon fruit powder”?

  • FREEZE-DRIED FRUIT: Instead of dragon fruit powder you can use also freeze fried dragon fruit. One pack (95g) is enough for about 3-4 smoothies roughly. Therefore if you want to replace the powder with the freeze-dried ones, I would add 3/4 – 1 of a cup. That is about 25-30 grams.

More info

  • FRESH FRUIT: If you aren’t struggling to find fresh dragon fruit, and don’t mind paying so much, only for the real deal, then surely you should try out this recipe with fresh dragon fruit. Replace 1 cup of fresh dragon fruit with roughly 1 Tbsp. pitaya powder ( at least that’s what I did so far)

The low-carb version of the Strawberry Pineapple Smoothie

Is this smoothie keto-friendly?

This healthy strawberry pineapple smoothie has got slightly too many carbs to be allowed on a ketogenic diet. But I have a tip.

One bowl of this smoothie contains about  35 grams of carbs. (13% of DRI)

How to make this a low carb smoothie

This is a damn delicious smoothie! It contains plenty of amazing benefits and is low in calories. But unfortunately, it contains some carbs. It’s not a high amount, but anyone who is on a low-carb diet should be looking into changing things up. Here are some tips to reduce them :).

STEP 1:

Skip the BANANA.

Bananas are great. They are filling, sweet and healthy. Unfortunately, they also contain sugars, meaning carbs.

STEP 2:

Reduce pineapples

STEP 3:

Add with frozen cauliflower if needed (tasteless & colourless)

STEP 4:

Add for keto acceptable sweeteners.

This recipe doesn’t really need any sweetener, but if you reduce the fruits, then you might want to add more sweetness. Here are some low-carb options:

Monk fruit sweetener & Swerve

My favourite alternatives are: monk fruit sweetener (US-AMAZON), stevia or swerve (UK AMAZON).

Stevia

Although as a warning, I wouldn’t recommend stevia anymore, as it leaves a weird aftertaste. But monk fruit sweetener or swerve is a great alternative, with no weird aftertaste. And they are fine on keto.

  • ½ frozen ripe banana small
  • ¾ cup frozen pineapple

  • Start slowly on low setting blending the 3 ingredients, until they are getting medium smooth. Help with a temper, as you haven't used much liquid.
  • Now you can add chia seeds (optional), protein powder (optional) and dragon fruit powder and frozen strawberries.
  • Finally, blend all ingredients until smooth. Add more milk if needed. Or blend it longer if you want it to be a thinner consistency. Tada! Enjoy your tropical breakfast smoothie 🙂

Step by step guide:

Preparation

  • Wash your fruits before freezing (plenty of pesticides / bacterias)
  • Freeze the fruits 24 h beforehand or buy pre-frozen fruits

  • Get dragon fruit powder (chia seeds, and toppings) online. Ideally always be stocked.

Tips before starting:

  • Blenders: Ideally use a High-speed blender. A normal travel-blender is fine, too, or worst case a food processor.
  • If you don’t have a high-speed blender, then skip the ice. Or Mini Ice Cube Mould.
  • You could use instead of milk also even yoghurt (for high-speed blenders) or water. See “Swapp ingredients”
How to layer your smoothie the right way:
  • Pour in liquid: milk
  • Scoop in the dry Ingredients: Chia seeds, Protein Powder, Dragon fruit Powder
  • Drop the frozen fruits into the: Banana, Pineapple, Strawberry
  • Blend: Until smooth (Use tamper if needed)
  • Serve & add toppings: Like cut out fruits with a cookie cutter set
NOTE:

I follow in my recipe videos sometimes only in a different order to show off some colours.

The order is there, so the powder doesn’t fly up in the air, and gets nicely mixed.

Do you guys know what this topping is? Bee pollen! Super healthy!

Drizzle anything your ♡ desires on top of the smoothie.

Here are a few ideas, that go well with this recipe:

  • Kiwi sliced

  • Bee pollen

7 Tips – What to do.

Here are just a few reminders, how to make THE BEST smoothie.

My best tips and biggest mistakes.

  • Always add a little bit of liquid. You can top it up in the end, if you think it’s too thick.
  • The longer you blend it, the thinner the smoothie becomes.
  • You can use pitaya powder or freeze-dried pitaya pieces. Fresh pitayas are great too, but freeze them
  • Save your blades: Add softer near the blades (first), to ensure they keep sharp for long.
  • You can use any kind of plant-based milk (unsweetened)
  • You can skip the banana. Simply add more of the other fruits, like pineapples.
  • You can also use mango with this smoothie, or replace pineapples.
  • In case you add green veggies, be wary it will change the colour of your strawberry smoothie. Colourless and low-calorie veggies are cauliflower.

7 Tips – What not to do.

  • Don’t make your smoothie too sweet by adding additional sweeteners (the fruits are sweet enough)-especially if you use fresh dragon fruit
  • Take care, pink dragon fruits ( ink. powder) stains easily
  • You should add the pitaya directly after the milk, and before the frozen veggies, so that it doesn’t get messy and the powder rise up (I used a different order just for pictures :)) order

FAQ

Useful Smoothie questions

Can a blender crush ice?

Most smaller, slower blenders can’t crush ice.

I suggest a high-speed blender, like a Vitamix (US-amazon).

But, hey hey not so fast!

No need to give up if you don’t have one.

If you don’t have one, don’t worry.

A cheaper portable blender (or travel blender) are okay for now as well.

TIP:

Just make sure to use mostly frozen fruits.

Especially if you don’t add ice! (Dah!)

How much ice should you add to your smoothie?

I would use in winter 1-2 ice cubes per smoothie. Plus frozen fruits and fresh or frozen veggies. But in summer, for example, you might want to use 3-4 ice cubes per smoothie. As you probably prefer the smoothie to be more cooling and to stay fresh for longer. Remember though:Again, you don’t need to use any ice at all. As it can dilute the smoothie. You should play around with the amount. Have a look at my PRO’s and CON’S for adding ice, into smoothies.
