9 TIPS – How to check if a watermelon is ripe and sweet?

Well..before you know how to cut a watermelon for parties in squares or in sticks you need to be able to choose a ripe and sweet watermelon, right?

Various ways indicate if the watermelon in the shop, is a “good”, ripe one.

Because let’s face it, there is nothing worse, than carrying this heavy baby, all the way home, cutting, slicing, serving it, and then it, unripe, and mealy and just taste NOT good.

So there are 8 Tips, on how to check if your watermelon is ripe:

1. The “Yellow belly”:

The “belly” or underside of your watermelon should have a yellowish, and not white round big spot(field spot). This is one of the easiest signs to tell for sure if you managed to choose a ripe watermelon. The darker the yellow is, the riper the melon. Because it means usually, that the fruit has been on the vine for longer.

2. KNOCK KNOCK: The hollow sound!

Pick up the watermelon, and knock it against the centre of the watermelon. If you can hear a hollow sound, then it’s also a good sign, that the fruit is ripe and sweet.

The deeper, darker the sound, the riper the watermelon.

The higher pitch of the sound, the unriper the melon is.

But you should NOT use the knuckles of your hand when you knock, instead use the palm of your hands.

3. Give it a squeeze

If you can squeeze into the watermelon very slightly, and the shell is not extremely hard, and also not giving in too lightly, then this is also a good indicator that the melon is ripe.

This kind of is the same with most other fruits if you remember. Like when you bend a cucumber, and it’s super hard, then it’s unripe, when it’s super bendy and soft, it’s too ripe, but when it has a little bit of a “give” its ideal.

4. A lot of webbing (dark sugar spots)

Have you ever noticed the “webbing” structure of watermelons?

The webbing and dark, nearly black sugar spots are the indicators if your watermelon is sweet.

This structure is also called “sugar spots”. They appear during pollination, and the more webbing your melon shows, the sweeter your melon should be.

That’s because the fruit has been pollinated more and therefore is also sweeter.

5. Dark and dull, rather shiny and bright.

Avoid the lighter, shiny melons and go for the darker more dull ones instead because they are riper.

6. Uniform shape

Also the shape matters. If the melons are irregular, like with bumps then they got not the same amount of sun or water, and they aren’t as tasty.

So choose oval or round once, as long as they are uniform

7. Sweet smell

This is something that you might learn over time, but ripe watermelons smell sweeter. Try to get up close to its shell and smell it. This method not only works for watermelons, but you can also check if a honeydew or cantaloupe is ripe and if it smells.

8. Pick the heavier ones

Now, the criteria getting a little bit trickier. You can also compare the weights, as a ripe watermelon should be heavier. Compare similar sizes, and if the other criteria haven’t helped then choose the heavier one.

9. Remember the bad “suppliers”

On the Martha Stewart blog, they suggest that if you once catch a bland and tasteless watermelon, you should remember the supplier and avoid them in future. That’s because they taste once flavourless, and the chances are high that it happened again.
