OATS, OLD-FASHIONED: 

Oats build the base, together with this delicious Cookie Dough Smoothie Recipe. Oats are super filling and that’s why it’s a great base for a breakfast smoothie recipe. Also, they are high in plant-based protein, did you know that?

On top of that, it is highly beneficial because it’s good for your gut, helps against constipation, can lower the chances of colon cancer, and lowers blood sugar levels. It can even help with weight loss, despite you might not believe me. But because it is so filling, you will less likely snack too much and even eat less at your next meal.

PLANT, BASED MILK, UNSWEETENED:

You can use many different ones, ideally an unsweetened one, for health reasons: Any nut milk is fine. Even soy milk, as it’s rich in nutrition is good.

VANILLA BEAN PASTE (OR EXTRACT): 

One of the key ingredients of this recipe is a high-quality vanilla bean paste. It makes all the difference in the world if you have a high-quality one, (where you see the black little dots, from the vanilla flower) compared to using a cheaper one. Especially many vanillas exact, are thinned out and have a faded taste.

But these are much less processed. And processed foods are seriously bad for your health. Unless you use dark chocolate, which the cancer organisations recommend you consume, rather than other types of chocolate. But only in smaller amounts.

Cacao nibs are also high in magnesium and manganese. These crispy, and crunchy little things are also anti-inflammatory that is extremely high in antioxidants.

They even protect you against diabetes, heart diseases and as mentioned cancer.

NOTE:

Be careful though, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or are sensitive to allergic to chocolate or dietary nickel, as cacao nibs can cause an effect.

BANANAS, FROZEN: 

 Adding sweetness, making the smoothie thick, creamy, and cold. 

Plus they add fibre, and nutrients and may help to control your blood sugar levels. They are great for your digestive systems (since I’ve eaten smoothies daily, I have NO bloating issues anymore!) and high in antioxidants (the things that fight diseases).

MACADAMIA NUTS: 

These super-rich nuts, add a buttery, creamy taste and structure, which is ideal for this cookie dough smoothie bowl recipe. But you can also exchange it with cashews, peanuts, almonds or any other nuts.

I love adding macadamia nuts into smoothies because they are also great to improve your gut, that’s because they are high in fibre, they ensure that your blood sugar doesn’t spike up and stays consistent, and they are great for your heart.

All ingredients are a must for this recipe, but you can replace the milk, and nuts with any of your favourites.

  • Blender high speed, (or use more liquid for a less powerful blender)

Ingredients
  

  • ¼ cup old-fashioned oats (but other oats work too)
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened plant milk (or other types, add 1-1.5 if you have a less powerful blender)
  • 1.5 (or more) tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)
  • 2-3 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 2 tsp cacao nibs, organic, fairtrade (or chocolate chips)
  • 2.5 cups frozen, ripe bananas
  • cups macadamia nuts (you can sub these or other nuts)
  • 1 cup cauliflower, frozen (optional)

Instructions
 

Making Oat Flour:

  • Firstly, the secret to making this smoothie super creamy:
    Toss the oats into the blender, and blend it for 1-3 minutes to create oat flour. (Doesn't need to be perfectly blended, but fine enough.

Add the liquid ingredient:

  • Now, pour the milk and vanilla bean paste inside.

Dry Ingredients:

  • Add the protein- and cinnamon powder as well as cacao nibs to the blender.

Hard Ingredients:

  • Lastly, add the hard ingredients on top: Add the frozen, ripe bananas.
  • Add the macadamia nuts.
  • Lastly, toss the cauliflower into the mix (optional).
  • Blend and mash (with a temper) on a low setting. The batter will be very thick. You will need to use the pulse button if you have one. That you need to press in short intervals to break down the harder ingredients.

If you make sure to choose a vegan milk and protein powder, then this recipe is vegan. 

Is this delicious breakfast smoothie gluten-free?  

If you can only eat gluten-free, then make sure to choose the right protein powder, which is gluten-free. 

But there are some out there that are vegan, and gluten-free.

Also, choose gluten-free oats. 

Also, vanilla bean paste (or extract) is gluten-free. And a lot of plant-based milk types are also gluten-free. 

Is this Cookie Dough Recipe a dairy-free smoothie recipe?  

MILK:

Yes, you don’t need any dairy for this Cookie dough smoothie bowl, unless you want to.

For the milk, you can use either unsweetened plant-based milk, like almond milk, cashew milk, macadamia milk, soy milk, rice milk or oat milk. But you could even use dairy milk.

PROTEIN POWDER:

Also regarding the protein powder, you simply need to choose your favourite, lactose & dairy-free protein powder. I recommend using a vanilla-flavoured one, though.

100%!

My Secret Recipe Tips


1. BLEND THE OATS: Oat Flour

My tip is, that you add the Old fashioned oats first into the blender.

And then you blend them for about 30-60 seconds until they become finely blended oat flour. This makes the difference and changes the whole texture of this smoothie.

Then you continue adding the milk and the other ingredients. This way you end up with a much smoother and creamier, butter-like texture.

 Because the first time I tried this recipe, the oats didn’t fully blend, and although it was still incredibly tasty, I wasn’t that much impressed by the texture. And then I thought, HEY, why not blend the oats first. :0

2. MAKE IT THICK: Add cauliflower

This is another secret tip, which is adding also creaminess to the smoothie, without having to add smother tons of calories to this cookie dough smoothie. This wonder veggie is super healthy. Because it is low carb, low-calorie, high fibre, and extremely nutritious.
You can add fit literally to any smoothie, without changing the taste, and colour, making it healthier and thicker and creamier. What a game-changer, right?

What to DO  

  • Use your tamper/wooden spoon/ spatula to push down the smoothie blend
  • Never use your temper, when you take off your lid unless you turn off the blender fully (safety reasons!!) The tamper could get into the blades, and you don’t want those the part of the temper hitting your eyes!!
  • Chop down your veggies/fruits into small pieces, before freezing  
  • Blend on a very low setting to make a THICK smoothie bowl
  • Add a splash of liquid first, but if the blender heats up, add more.
  • For a healthier smoothie add cacao nibs, but you can also use chocolate chips for a sweeter (naughtier) version

What NOT to do  

  • Please don’t SCRATCH your blender and use a spoon to scrape out your smoothie. Use a spatula
  • You shouldn’t add too much liquid if you want a thicker smoothie, you can always add more gradually
  • Don’t add any sweeteners fruits and ripe bananas sweetened smoothies naturally already.
  • Add sweeteners in the end if needed to

Yes, adding oats to smoothies is a great way to add nutrition and fibre to your smoothie. They are very filling and promote weight loss. 
On top of that, they can reduce the risk of heart-related diseases and diabetes. Oats are great for your gut and intestinal health.
So, feel free to add oats to your healthy breakfast smoothies or meal replacement smoothies.

Which oats are best for a cookie dough smoothie recipe?

I have tried this recipe so far only with Old-fashioned oats.
It works very well, with the 2 variations. Either just drop all ingredients into the blender to make the Cookie Dough Smoothie Recipe, or firstly add the Old-Fashioned oats, blending them and making oat flour. And then adding the other ingredients. 
But I can imagine, that you can also use quick-cooking oats or steel-cut oats (certified gluten-free oats work too!)

Can I make a smoothie and leave it in the fridge overnight?

Yes, you certainly can make a smoothie and leave it overnight in your fridge. But you will want to cover it up. My secret tip is to store your smoothie overnight, to pour it into a thermal cup. That often still keeps it kind of in a semi-thick and cool temperature, but better than if you would just store it in a glass.
Smoothies in a fridge are good to keep for up to 24 hours, or you can freeze them.

Can I use steel-cut oats, to make oat flour?

Yes, you totally can. It depends, if you are using a blender, or if you are using a food processor. Because I had trouble once using my food processor, and getting it very fine. But using a blender, especially a high-speed blender to make oat flour works with steel-cut oats.
Give it a go! 
 Note: In this recipe, you don’t need to have the flour perfectly fine anyway, so even if the flower has still some smaller.

What makes a smoothie thicker?

There are lots of different ways how you make a smoothie thicker.
Oats are one way. You can see in the picture how thick and creamy this smoothie is.
Use very little liquid to make a smoothie super thick.

Bananas help to thicken smoothies. You can use thicker milk, like oat milk, instead of water or almond milk, or you can even freeze your milk into ice, like coconut milk.
Another great way to thicken up smoothies is by adding chia seeds because they are turning into gel-like creamy things when they combine with water or milk.

Also, you shouldn’t over-blend your smoothie to make it thick, otherwise, the blender heats up, and it becomes thinner. And the key for any thick smoothie is that all ingredients get evenly blended. You do that by pushing down the fruits and ingredients constantly with your temper if you have one. They come with a Vitamix for example. In another blender, you need to shake in-between very well. You can also turn it off and stir manually.
Yes, it is hard work, to make a thick and creamy smoothie bowl.

Which type of oats is the healthiest?

All types of oats are very healthy, as they are high in protein, nutrition and vitamins. But steel-cut oats are a little less processed.
The unhealthiest oatmeals are the one that contains added sugars. Many pre-packed and ready packs have added brown sugar, instant maple or other sweeteners added which are not a healthy choice.
If you consume them more often, your risk of diabetes, obesity or heart risk would be increased.

What is the difference between the oat types?

Steel-cut oats have a less processed, and chewy and nutty texture, but take longer to prepare.
While rolled and instant oats taste milder and softer but takes only a few minutes to cook and prepare.
Both types contain plenty of nutrients, protein and vitamins and can be added to smoothies, baking dishes and your breakfast.

Is oat (flour) really gluten-free?

Make sure, that your oat flour is really gluten-free, you want to get certified-free oats, and then blend them to make flour out of them.
You can also buy certified gluten-free oat flour directly er at the store. But I prefer buying the oats, and then making the flour yourself because while you are making the smoothie it just takes like 30-60 seconds longer.

But the key is to buy CERTIFIED gluten-free. Otherwise, the oats could be cross-contaminated, meaning, the factories could produce other products where gluten is involved and small particles might end up in the package.

Is this Cookie Dough Smoothie really Vegan?

Yes, it is! As with most smoothie recipes, the ingredients are not 100% fixed.
Like this Cookie though smoothie recipe tastes good with plenty of different milk types. Any nutty type of milk takes in credible good, and they are all vegan. Then make sure to choose a vegan protein powder.
