Can you replace “dragon fruit powder”?

You can use fresh dragon fruits as well instead of the pitaya powder.

Up to you!

FRESH DRAGON FRUIT VS DRAGON FRUIT POWDER

You can use either pitaya powder (=dragon fruit powder) or fresh dragon fruits.

I love the powder, because it’s always available (like on amazon or other online shops), compared to the fresh fruit, and it’s the SAME PRODUCT. The powder is the freeze-dried version, just with the water being removed. With no added sugars.

Plus the fresh fruit is often much more expensive, at least in my area (London), compared to the powder, and so it just makes sense. Plus it doesn’t expire any time soon.

How to replace the dragon fruit powder with fresh dragon fruit:

You can also replace 1 cup of fresh dragon fruit with roughly 1 Tbsp.

Pitaya powder. That always worked for me.


Recipe Tips 


What to DO  

  • Don’t add too much liquid if you want a thicker smoothie  
  • Use more liquid gradually if your blender needs it
  • Use your tamper/wooden spoon/ spatula to push the smoothie blend  
  • Chop down your veggies/fruits into small pieces, before freezing  
  •  Always wash your fruits and berries
  • Powders should be added at the beginner to your blender after the liquids are fully blended, but for the “pretty effect” are often added last

What NOT to do  

  • Please don’t SCRATCH your blender and use a spoon to scrape out your smoothie. Use a spatula  
  • Blend on a very low setting to make a THICK smoothie bowl  
  • Add tiny ice cubes, if your blender can’t handle thick ones (mini-ice cube trays)  
  • Don’t add any sweeteners fruits and ripe bananas sweetened smoothies naturally already.   
  • Only if needed add your sweeteners in the end

There are several differences between the pitaya (dragon fruit) and the acai.

Also, the taste is different, as the acai is a berry and does taste more like a berry (similar to blackberries perhaps) and pitayas taste more like a fruit, similar to a sweet, ripe kiwi.
Otherwise, there are both extremely healthy and a great addition to your diet. 
You can create with pitaya and acai amazing nutritious, thick or thin smoothies.

Pitaya: Sweet (fruity, like kiwi)
Acai: More settled sweet (like berries)

COLOUR:
Pitaya: Bright Pink (there are also white and yellow dragon fruits)
Acai: Dark Purple.

WHERE TO BUY:
Pitaya: Rarer. In powder, the version is available easier online. Fresh available in some countries, or as frozen packs in stores or smoothie packs.
Acai: You can find mostly only as pureed version, as the fresh berries go off within a short time (about 1 day)

Does dragon fruit make your pee red?

Hehe, if you do eat a lot of dragon fruit, your pee and even your Nr. 2 may turn red or pink!
It’s nothing to worry about though. And there is no need to contact the doctors. Once the fruit is out of your system and you consume enough other liquid (like water) and meals, it will return to normal.
This just means that you ate a lot of dragon fruit!
